Throughout history, artists and subcultures have uniquely formed on the fringes of cities and societies. Today, much of this culture has shifted from physical streets and lofts to digital domains and handles, offering a new destination to discover artists. What was once the job of a city dweller tapped into an underground scene is now done via clicking, swiping and scrolling through the depths of the artist-laden digital landscape.
In a conversation with @Love.Watts, a now seasoned curator in discovering and bolstering artists from the digital space, and Jeffrey Deitch, who ring-led the downtown New York art scene in the 80s with his carnivalesque repertoire of artists, we explore the similarities, differences, and nuances of artist discovery through the lens of digital versus physical space.
